7 Types of Dog Training

7 Types of Dog Training

As a dog owner, you would spend many hours on training and teaching. The process can be exhausting but worth it at the end.

The strengths and characteristics of your dog dictate which type of training is appropriate. While Great Danes are excellent as protection dogs, Poodles have their strengths as service dogs. Here’s a brief overview of the seven most famous types of dog training.

  1. Obedience Training

This is the most basic yet important training for your dog. For best results, obedience training should begin at a young age. This training aims to teach your dog how to follow simple commands such as sit or stay. It allows you to maintain control over your dog in unexpected circumstances. Obedience training lays the groundwork for specialized training in the future.

  1. Service Training

Another important form of dog training is service training. These are state-approved working animals that assist disabled individuals in their everyday lives. There are different types of service dogs such as:

  • Diabetic Alert Dogs
  • Mobility Assistance Dogs
  • Hearing Dogs
  • Seizure Alert Dogs
  • Guide Dogs

Keep in mind that not all dogs can be trained to perform such tasks. Only a few dog breeds such as Poodles, German Shepherds, and Great Danes have the characteristics necessary to be service dogs.

  1. Therapy Training

People often confuse service dogs with therapy dogs, which is not the case. Therapy dogs are trained to comfort people in emotionally challenging situations. These are calm, friendly, and empathic dogs often recommended for people sick with terminal diseases or going through any kind of trauma.

  1. Agility Training

If your dog has a lot of energy, you can consider agility training. It engages them in physical exercises such as jumping, running through poles, and tire jumps to help channel all their energy. Agility training has a positive impact on a dog’s mental and physical health.

  1. Behavioral Training

If your dog is showing negative habits such as aggression, excessive barking or biting, and digging, you need to get behavioral training. The aim is to help your dog unlearn these negative behaviors through a pattern of punishments and rewards.

During behavioral training, positive reinforcement takes place when the owner gives treats to solidify good habits. Whereas, shocks are given as a form of negative reinforcement to get rid of unwanted habits.

  1. Tracking Training

This is one of the most common training services dog owners avail. It teaches dogs how to use their strong sense of smell to locate things, people, or animals. These dogs are especially useful to police and military services as they help locate bombs or drugs.

  1. Protection Training

Dogs with natural qualities such as confidence, courage, and suspicion of strangers are often trained to be professional protectors. They often serve as guard dogs for private or public institutions. The following breeds are best suited for protection training:

  • Belgian Malinois
  • Cane Corso
  • Great Danes
  • Rhodesian Ridgeback
  • Rottweilers

It is a rigorous process that teaches your dogs everything from following simple commands to attacking suspicious individuals.
